Our ethos
Blackout VPN was built out of frustration with the modern internet. Data brokers harvest your information, corporations trade your identity, and governments record your habits in the name of safety. We think that amounts to control, and we wanted no part in it.
Why I co-founded and built Blackout
Mostly, exhaustion. Data breach after data breach in the news, another privacy-harming policy every few months, and nothing ever seemed to change. Then there was my inbox. Years of advertising and spam from companies I never gave my address to, despite aliases, unsubscribing, and careful email hygiene. The brokers trading my identity behind every form I filled in leaked it faster than I could lock it down. Even the big VPN companies, the ones selling themselves as the answer, tie your identity to your payment method on the way in. Mullvad showed a VPN could be run differently, and that business model inspired Blackout. This is what I wanted to exist.
We keep our own house in order first. We log nothing and track nothing. Our website runs without analytics, tracking scripts, or cookies, and we don't dress data collection up as user experience.
Why we exist
Each new child safety law and anti-terror measure chips away at your autonomy. Age verification mandates collect identity data at scale. Digital ID makes tracking the default. Once your information sits in a database, you no longer control it. We are not willing to help governments watch you in the name of protecting you.
The less that is known about you, the less can be used against you. Blackout VPN is for people who see privacy as a way of limiting power over their lives, and who would rather not be forced to trust their government or ISP with everything they do online.
What we stand for
- Privacy by default. Our site and apps run without trackers or analytics.
- No logs. We can't hand over what we never store.
- Consistency. We apply this everywhere, not just where it's convenient.
- Transparency. Our app is forked WireGuard. Your private keys work with WireGuard's open source applications.
What about Law Enforcement demands?
Payment and keys are structurally separated. No database entry connects your payment to a key, a device, or an IP address.
If a government agency compels us to hand over data, they get an empty folder, because nothing was ever stored. We designed it that way.
This is why we accept cash and Monero. The option should exist for people whose threat model demands it. You choose your threat model. We make sure the infrastructure supports it.
What we believe
Technology should serve the people using it, not governments or corporations. We believe in decentralisation, and that privacy should be the default rather than something you have to fight for.
