People are starting to use large language models like therapists. They dump grief, addiction, trauma, relationship problems, family conflict, and anxiety into a chatbot that sounds patient and safe. It is not safe. It is a tech product. Once you use an LLM for emotional support, some of the most sensitive information you can produce is now sitting inside a company system, where those disclosures can be processed, stored, reviewed, and used to improve the product you are talking to. That is not a private conversation. It is a high-value data collection point.
Mental health disclosures are not ordinary data. They can reveal fear, instability, sexual history, medical issues, addictions, personal failures, and the weakest points in someone’s life. In a real therapy setting, that material is treated as highly sensitive for a reason. Traditional therapy comes with confidentiality duties, professional boundaries, and legal protections. Access to records is restricted. Disclosure has consequences. The entire structure is supposed to limit exposure. LLM chatbots do not operate inside that structure, and most are not healthcare providers, which means the privacy rules people associate with therapy often do not apply at all.
Therapy is supposed to protect the patient. AI systems are built to improve the service, monitor usage, and expand capability. That means your confessions are not treated like protected disclosures. They are treated like useful input. Several major AI companies use user conversations to refine their systems, which turns emotional oversharing into product fuel. Engineers may review conversations. Moderation systems may scan them. Internal pipelines may process them. Even where companies claim safeguards or anonymisation, the underlying problem remains the same. Extremely intimate disclosures are being collected by systems that were never built around therapeutic confidentiality.
Part of the danger comes from the interface itself. LLMs are designed to feel attentive. They mirror supportive language, ask follow-up questions, and keep the conversation moving. That style encourages people to reveal more than they should, because the system feels safe while doing the exact opposite of what a confidential space is supposed to do. The more someone returns to the same chatbot, the worse the exposure gets. Over time, a company can end up holding a dense record of a person’s emotional state, vulnerabilities, relationships, health concerns, sexual history, private behaviour, and personal history. That is enough to build a deeply revealing profile of someone’s life. No competent therapist would treat that kind of material as reusable system input. Tech platforms do it by default.
AI can be useful for brainstorming, writing, coding, learning, or helping organise your thoughts. None of that changes the privacy problem created when people start using these systems as a substitute for confidential care. You are not speaking to a protected professional. You are interacting with a data-collecting product run by a company that has every incentive to retain, analyse, and improve from what you reveal. The mistake is not that the model answered. The mistake is that the disclosure entered the system at all. Reducing exposure starts with recognising which conversations should never become platform data.
If a conversation belongs in therapy, it does not belong in a model pipeline.
